About
An age and stage related program that places players into our Performance Player Pathway, with a continued focus on the development of our players and coaches. With a player centred approach, we can further develop technical ability, game understanding, and applying the tactical elements of the game. We provide a Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) inspired program that will include a holistic curriculum overseen and delivered by our qualified technical leads.
At this age group, teams will be led by licensed SPDSA staff coaches. Volunteer parent coaches will round out the coaching staff to help forward the standards of both the club and the game. By providing a safe environment, players will have the opportunity to develop with program specific core principles that fit within the Phoenix identity both on and off the field.
Team Formation Philosophy
At this age, SPDSA technical staff will be looking to create teams suited for tiered competition. It is fundamental & vital that parents and athletes recognize the high level of commitment required to be a Phoenix player. There is a selection and placement process that includes an independent group of assessors working alongside the coaching staff to ensure the process is athlete centred. Additionally, in-season assessments as well as in season coach's reports will be key criteria in the placement process. The Technical Department will be involved in all selections & placements to ensure the best competitive and learning environment for players. Our goal is that every athlete is placed in the most appropriate environment based on a holistic four corner approach - Technical, Tactical, Physical, and Psycho-Social aspects. Where possible teams will train together to monitor changes and improvement in player performance. The opportunity to trial for the top tier is key incentive for players to continue their development pathway. Development in this age group is key as a means of providing the opportunity for players to pursue the high-performance pathway that our PDP (player development program) offers at the u15 age group.
Coaching
U13 to U17 Tier I or II: SPDSA staff coaches will be assigned to lead teams with volunteer parent coaches rounding out the coaching staff.
Tier II and/or tier III teams will continue to be led by parent volunteer coaches with supplemental technical programming available from SPDSA technical staff.
A full seasonal plan and curriculum guides all coaches through the program supported by SPDSA Technical staff.
The best qualities of a coach for this stage of player are:
The Season
Training begins in mid to late April, weather permitting. The Edmonton Minor Soccer Association (EMSA) league that our teams play in runs for a period of twelve weeks over the May, June and July months. League games typically follow an 11 v 11 format. Matches are situated all over the Edmonton region. A typical weekly commitment will consist of two-three training days (including strength and condition or SAQ (speed, agility, quickness) workouts and one match. Game/Technical/Practice sessions are typically 60-90 minutes in length. In addition, selected teams may further their seasons by competing in Provincial Championship Competitions in August.
Game and Tournament Play
Teams will be placed in appropriate league play for competition and development needs. The SPDSA philosophy is to continue to give players the best opportunity for development while not over-emphasizing results. Tournament participation for each team is to be decided upon by SPDSA coaching staff in consultation with parent group at the start of the season. Tournaments are an additional cost to families.
Days of Play: To be determined by competition organization.
Game Format:11 v 11 (10 v 10 plus goalkeepers) with offside in effect.
